GOVERNANCE OF OPEN SKY CO-OPERATIVE
At June Annual General Meetings, the members of Open Sky Co-operative elect their Board of Directors to manage the organization on their behalf. Here are the Directors for 2020:
Helen douglas, chair of the board
Helen is a semi-retired veterinarian who has a passionate interest in justice opportunities for all people. An avid traveller, when Helen alights in the Tantramar Region, she donates much volunteer energy to local organizations. Open Sky is grateful for Helen’s professional support and spirit, that has a positive effect on everyone at Open Sky!
Blaise Dobbin, Vice-chair of the board
Blaise Dobbin grew up in a small fishing Nova Scotia village, and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a degree in Business Management & Marketing. Since then, he has worked in the building and construction industry, and is currently the Business Development Manager for Compact Appliances Ltd, an Atlantic Canada distribution company for alternative heating products. Blaise’s wife, Michelle, is a school teacher, and they have two children: Megan and Nolan. When he is not working, volunteering and following his children’s interests, Blaise fills his time with running, swimming, cycling and kayaking.
Pam Cadman, Treasurer of the board
Pam is the CFO of the East Coast Dental Group, and brings her skills as a Certified Professional Accountant to her Board work with Open Sky. She is a parent in a very active family, and is delighted to call Sackville home.
Christian Watts, Board member at large
Chris has been a program participant and volunteer at Open Sky Co-operative since the summer of 2012. Chris is a graduate of Tantramar Regional High School (2009), has a Food Handling Certificate (2010) and completed the Open Sky Employment Development Program (2016). He is the Chair of the Board of Powerhouse Co-operative Ltd. (a business developed with the support of Open Sky, that provides living wages and sustainable employment to adults who experience barriers). Chris likes writing, and is currently working on a next-generation science fiction book.
Debbie Champagne, Board member at large
Debbie is well-known in the Sackville community for her philanthropy and positive involvement with causes that are important to us all. Open Sky is pleased to have Debbie’s skills and experiences to bear, as the Strategic Plan is being implemented.
jane braedley, Board member at large
Jane is recently-retired, having had a varied and successful career for the past 24+ years as a prominent physiotherapist in the Town of Amherst NS. She was most recently involved with Lifemark for the past 18 years as a physiotherapist, clinic director, area manager, mentor and friend to all colleagues who came across her path. Open Sky is happy to have her professional healthcare experience informing and inspiring our organization!
Peter Irwin, Board member at large
Peter has a Masters Degree in Library Sciences and a keen interest in the history of food and cooking. A graduate of the Open Sky Employment Development Program in 2018, Peter now works with Powerhouse Co-operative Ltd. as a crossing guard. In his spare time, Peter can be found baking delicious treats, and responding to small catering jobs that come his way. Peter is an active member of St. Paul’s Anglican church in Sackville.
Joanna fisher, Board member at large
Joanna lives in Sackville with her husband Zack and beloved dog, Liza Jane. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from UNB and a Certified Professional Accountant designation. Joanna loves to travel, stay active and is pleased to join the Board of Directors in 2019.
SHAYNE MANN, Board member at large
Shayne Mann is a retired school teacher and principal, with wide professional experience in a variety of roles in education. He is also a parent, a spouse and an avid volunteer. Shayne and his wife, Kathy, have recently retired to the Maritimes. Shayne writes: My career was spent trying to ensure that all my students had opportunities for learning and personal growth and opportunities in their futures. I have been a strong proponent of equity and inclusiveness in all of my schools and in my personal life. I hope I can use my background, commitment and skills to be able to contribute as an active Board member to the invaluable work that Open Sky does.
Cathy pente, Board member at large
Cathy Pente has worked as an occupational therapist for 40 years, with many populations and health care challenges. Since moving to Sackville 18 years ago, she has worked at the Amherst and Moncton Hospitals and as the Registrar for the New Brunswick Association of Occupational Therapists, a bilingual position she still holds. Cathy has been learning more about the fibre arts since her retirement from hospital work a year ago and has been sharing this knowledge with Marshview Middle School students as a community partner with the Engage! Program. Cathy enjoys all kinds of crafts, choral singing, swimming and aerobics.
Margaret Tusz-King, Executive Director
Margaret attends Open Sky Board meetings and resources the work of the Board of Directors, in her ex-officio role as Executive Director. When not working at Open Sky, Margaret is an Executive member of the Board of Directors of a national humanitarian organization – the Canadian Foodgrains Bank – whose central office is in Winnipeg MB.
