Overview of Organization:

Open Sky’s vision is to foster inclusive communities. Its mission is to improve life skills and opportunities for independent living of young adults living with mental health challenges or social disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Open Sky is 10 years old and is located on the outskirts of the lovely university town of Sackville N.B., on a sustainable farm, which forms a foundation for its experiential programming. Open Sky programming reach extends through New Brunswick and into Nova Scotia. The co-operative nature of Open Sky means that its framework of inclusion and engagement permeates all aspects of internal and external activities. The values, principles and educational practices of Open Sky are a source of stability for many who struggle with autism or other barriers to both inclusion and employment and make Open Sky unique and a leader in its field in Eastern Canada.

Open Sky is overseen by a 10-member volunteer Board of Directors and garners funding for its programming and facility from: charitable donors, government grants, interested foundations, the families/supporters of individuals who receive services and support, and from the wider community.

Experience and Assets:

The new ED will benefit from previous experience in the non-profit or charitable sector, the mental health and/or disability sector, and the education, social work, co-operative or other business sector. He/she will demonstrate an attitude of respect for all people, excellence in collaboration and a thoughtful blend of idealism and ability. Appreciating teamwork with others within a shared bigger vision will be a foundational leadership orientation.

The Ideal candidate possesses excellent leadership and communication skills to interpret and communicate the Open Sky vision to others and to welcome the valued ways that others find connection with Open Sky, including the excellent staff team, volunteers, families, supporters and community. Demonstrated effectiveness in developing and nurturing funding sources is also a key component.

Educational Requirements:

A university degree in a related discipline is a requirement. Complementary certification, training or skills in financial or co-operative management, human resources, education, program design and planning, and/or a helping profession (health, social) is also required. Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills are necessary.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Working with the Board of Directors – report; strategize; provide executive support; ensure communication; do risk assessment. (15%)
  2. Financial Performance and Viability – develop resources sufficient to ensure financial sustainability; ensure fiscal integrity; manage the budget; collaborate with Fundraising Committee of the Board. (20%)
  3. Mission and Operations – work with the Board and staff to ensure mission and vision are fulfilled through programming; ensure competent staffing and organizational management; provide back-up support to programming as needed. (40%)
  4. Outreach – as primary spokesperson and first point of contact; establish and maintain relationships with families, funders, government agencies and community; oversee marketing and visibility; represent Open Sky as a spokesperson, presenter and media presence. (25%)
